I've lately been interested in the lives of the junkmen – the way they scavenge through the stuff that we toss off, makes me think of them as some kind of adherents to a strange underground culture with its own mores, laws, and ethics. But then I think about it some more, and realize that the junkmen are simply finding new uses for our old tossed-off stuff.
I wonder if there are junkmen who specialize in any one kind of thing. I can see that you have taken a photo of a truck laden with lawnmowers. Have you ever seen a truck full of just lawn furniture? What about old rusty shopping carts? I know that most of these guys are usually on the way to unload their stuff at some recycling center – but sometimes I'd like to think that they're headed to some sort of junk bazaar, where everyone lines their trucks up and the junk collectors trade and barter for whatever junk they want the most.
Thanks Zach, for all your interesting reflections on the scrap metal collectors! There are a group of guys who hang around the recycle center and buy different things off of the trucks to resell at the flea market.

Obviously, I've done some thinking about junk.
WOW!! Super interesting stuff, made even more interesting by Zach's intense junk thinking. I am sooo excited to go back to school and see more.
